Recommended

Teaching Peace: How to Raise Children to Live in Harmony

With the rapidly changing face of our schools, communities and workforce, for the first time ever, we are truly living in a global society. At the same time, children are exposed to more violence than ever before. This vitally important book shows parents and educators how to instill tolerance in children by building a strong foundation of self-esteem.

Teaching Tolerance: Raising Open-Minded Empathetic Children

Teaching Tolerance is an invitation to parents and teachers: an invitation to examine their own habits and attitudes toward the community around them. Sara Bullard believes that once a parent is aware of the attitudes they were raised with, it is easier for them to teach their children true tolerance toward others.

Raising Compassionate, Courageous Children in a Violent World

In an increasingly violent and uncaring world, how can our children learn the basic qualities of kindness, courage, and decency? In a society drenched in images of crime and terror, how can we keep our children from withdrawing into fear or, worse, indifference? Raising Compassionate, Courageous Children in a Violent World, by psychotherapist Dr. Janice Cohn, tells us how. Based on the latest research and calling upon testimony from parents, educators, and experts in the field, this book gives parents practical methods to help raise children.

Crossing the Color Line: Race, Parenting and Culture

This thought-provoking mix of autobiography and analysis by a white woman married to a black man and the mother of two children documents “my own journey toward an internalized understanding of race — white, and black — and racism.” Reddy, who teaches English and women’s studies at Rhode Island College, notes that most literature treats interracial unions and families as problematic and recounts how she tried to find “nonproblem” books for her toddler son.

Everyday Acts against Racism: Raising Children in a Multicultural World

In this empowering book, mothers and teachers look at the effects of racism on our children and communities — and suggest practical ways we can work to end racial divisions. Drawing on diverse cultural perspectives as well as experiences in multiracial families, the contributors offer insightful commentaries on racial intolerance and their experiences in fighting it.
